Reviews provide customer-fit and trade-off evidence

Review platforms and industry sites describe strengths, weaknesses, common complaints, quality, and use cases. They can be valuable for comparison and problem/solution prompts, though traditional software review sites were only 1.1% of Kumar’s total citation sample.

Authority is increasingly multimodal

Video represented 4.2% of Kumar’s citations and was the largest non-corporate source class in that dataset. Reviews, tutorials, demonstrations, unboxings, and expert discussions create experiential evidence that text pages may not provide.

Reference sources help resolve entity identity

Wikipedia and similar sources can establish history, category, relationships, and notability. Yet reference pages were only 2.6% of Kumar’s citation set, so Wikipedia should be treated as one authority node rather than the entire strategy.

Partners and competitors create unexpected pathways

Integration pages, marketplaces, supplier pages, agency recommendations, “alternatives” articles, and competitor comparisons may all create retrievable evidence. A competitor page can simultaneously compete for the category and increase visibility for every alternative it names.

The competitive web is also a mutually informational network.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about this topic

Do review platforms dominate AI citations?+

Not universally. Their share varies by engine, category, intent, and dataset.

Why is video relevant to brand authority?+

It supplies demonstrations, experience, evaluation, and procedural evidence that engines may cite.

Is Wikipedia required for GEO?+

No. It can help entity recognition, but it is only one node in a broader authority ecosystem.

Can competitor content help my brand?+

Yes. Alternatives and comparison pages can create retrievable evidence linking your brand to a category and candidate set.
