Treatment and control must share time

Generative engines, indexes, and source ecosystems change continuously. Running treatment on Monday and control on Friday confounds the intervention with time. Interleave or synchronize observations and retain exact timestamps and product configuration.

Engine is an interaction—not background noise

The same intervention can improve one engine, do nothing on another, and reduce performance on a third. Estimate engine-specific effects and treatment-by-engine interactions before reporting a pooled average.

Locale, language, account, and context order require control

Language and geography change retrieval pools and source preferences. Account state and interface mode may change tool use. In controlled-context experiments, document order can influence attention and must be randomized or rotated.

Competitors can violate the stable-treatment assumption

One unit’s treatment may affect another unit’s outcome. If competitors adopt the same tactic or engine source allocation is limited, brand visibility can shift even when a page is unchanged. Saturation experiments vary the proportion treated to test whether effects weaken, spread, or crowd out others.
