How observable symptoms reveal different pipeline failures—and why each gap requires a different intervention.
Low visibility can arise from different mechanisms
A page that never appears may have an access or retrieval problem. A retrieved page can lose citation selection. A cited page may contribute little to the answer. A known brand can still lack independent authority in unbranded recommendations.
A content gap is an unmet information need
A content gap exists when a recurring user task lacks a sufficiently relevant and retrievable representation in the brand’s information ecosystem. It is more specific than noticing that a competitor published an article.
Citation and absorption gaps are downstream failures
A citation gap occurs when relevant content is available or retrieved but another source receives attribution. An absorption gap occurs when the page is cited yet contributes little factually, structurally, or linguistically. Evidence quality, semantic alignment, and source-selection competition may matter.
An authority gap extends beyond the owned site
When branded recognition is strong but unbranded discovery is weak, third-party comparisons, reviews, earned media, directories, partners, or reference sources may not connect the brand to the category. Rewriting H2 headings cannot solve an absent external evidence network.
Diagnosis should name the stage and next hypothesis
A useful diagnosis identifies the prompt family, platform, observable symptom, likely mechanism, evidence strength, and smallest intervention to test.
Symptom → Failed stage → Mechanism → Testable action
Questions about this topic
What is a content gap?+
An important recurring user information need without sufficiently relevant and retrievable representation in the brand ecosystem.
What is a citation gap?+
A condition where content is available or retrieved but is not selected as an explicit source.
What is an absorption gap?+
A condition where a source is cited but contributes little to the generated answer.
What is an authority gap?+
Insufficient external evidence connecting a brand to a topic, category, use case, or recommendation context.
Why must gaps remain separate?+
Because crawl fixes, new content, evidence improvements, and third-party authority work address different mechanisms.
