Citation is participation evidence—not participation depth
A visible citation confirms that a generative engine selected a source for attribution. It does not reveal whether the page supplied a background detail or the definition, evidence, comparison logic, and structure of the answer.
Two pages can each count as one citation under a binary metric while contributing radically different amounts of useful material.
Absorption adds another stage to the GEO pipeline
Zhang, He, and Yao describe a sequence in which prompt and intent lead to search triggering, citation selection, and then citation absorption. The broader pipeline also includes crawling, retrieval, reranking, context, fidelity, and user behavior.

Absorption asks what survived synthesis
A source is more deeply absorbed when its facts, wording, reasoning, evidence, or structure are reflected across the response. It may support several paragraphs or define the frame through which alternatives are compared.
This is different from link exposure, endorsement, click-through, and conversion. Each outcome requires its own metric.
The distinction changes what success means
A brand seeking referral exposure may prioritize citation breadth. A research publisher may value becoming the factual basis of an answer. A business focused on revenue still needs downstream behavior data.
The goal is not merely to become citable. It is to become usable evidence.
