Prominence, Fidelity, and Answer InfluenceBrand Prominence, Mention Position, and Share of Voice

How citation prominence extends to brand order, competitive visibility, and position-aware share of voice.

How citation prominence extends to brand order, competitive visibility, and position-aware share of voice.

Mention rate and mention position are different

A brand listed first and one listed fourth both count as mentioned, but their observable competitive prominence differs. Average ordinal position should be calculated only on runs where the brand actually appears, with mention rate reported separately.

Frequency and position reveal different competitive situations

A brand can have high mention rate but weak average position, suggesting broad awareness without leadership. Another may appear rarely but rank first when it qualifies, suggesting narrow yet strong relevance.

Raw share of voice ignores ordering

Share of Voice divides a brand’s mentions by all tracked brand and competitor mentions. It measures frequency, but cannot distinguish a brand consistently listed first from one consistently listed fifth.

Position-weighted variants can address this, but their weights must be justified rather than treated as natural facts.

Brand influence remains task-dependent

Definitions, comparisons, transactions, and local prompts require different evidence. A brand’s position becomes meaningful only in relation to the query family, criteria, platform, market, language, and time.

Measure competitive prominence within a defined information task—not across an undifferentiated prompt pool.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about this topic

What is brand mention position?+

It is the ordinal place at which a brand appears in a generated list or answer.

Should absent runs be included in average mention position?+

No. Report position on mentioned runs and mention rate across all relevant runs as separate metrics.

What is GEO share of voice?+

It is a brand’s share of mentions relative to tracked competitors within a defined prompt set.

What does raw share of voice miss?+

It does not capture ordering, prominence, sentiment, fidelity, or the brand’s role in the answer.
