From Page Visibility to Brand VisibilityBrand Mention Rate and Average Position

Why coverage and position must be measured separately to understand whether a brand merely appears or leads the answer.

Why coverage and position must be measured separately to understand whether a brand merely appears or leads the answer.

Mention Rate measures repeated exposure

Mention Rate divides prompts or observations containing the brand by a clearly defined prompt panel. A brand appearing in 18 of 50 target prompts has a 36% mention rate under those conditions.

The metric measures coverage, not recommendation strength or sentiment.

Presence is the minimum brand signal

Two brands can both appear in 40% of prompts while one is usually ranked first and the other appears as the fifth alternative. Mention Rate alone treats them as equal.

Average Position measures answer prominence

Average Position is the mean ordinal recommendation rank on observations where the brand is mentioned. A lower value indicates stronger placement.

Absent runs should remain in Mention Rate, not be assigned artificial bottom positions, so coverage and placement stay distinct.

Position is engine-specific

Kumar’s CRM study found materially different average brand positions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Grok. The figures are a dataset snapshot, but they demonstrate that no universal AI recommendation rank exists.

Report mention probability and conditional position together.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about this topic

How is Brand Mention Rate calculated?+

Divide relevant observations containing the brand by all observations in the defined prompt panel.

What does Average Position measure?+

It measures the brand’s mean ordinal recommendation position among runs where the brand is actually mentioned.

Should absent runs receive a position?+

No. Keep absence in Mention Rate and calculate position conditionally on mentions.

Can two brands with the same Mention Rate perform differently?+

Yes. They may differ greatly in average position, sentiment, prompt coverage, and competitive share.
